Most universities have stopped asking whether students use AI and started asking how. Policies differ by school and often by course, but the line usually falls in the same place. Help with thinking, structuring, and editing is fine. Submitting work you cannot explain is not.
Detection is the part everyone worries about, and the part most often misunderstood. AI detectors measure statistical properties of text, mainly how predictable each word is given the ones before it. Predictable writing scores as AI, and that includes plenty of careful human writing, especially from non-native speakers and from anyone taught to write plainly. A high score is a reason to look closer, not proof of anything, and Turnitin says so itself.
What actually gets students caught is rarely the prose. It is a reference list with sources that do not exist, an argument the student cannot defend in a five-minute conversation, and a document with no drafting history behind it.
That points straight at the honest workflow. Keep your drafts. Read every source you cite. Write the argument yourself, even where AI drafted a section, and stay able to say why each claim is there.
