How to tell if a journal article is fake in five minutes
The website is the one thing a forger controls completely, so every red-flag checklist asks you to grade work the fraudster gets to revise. Ask a register instead. The ISSN Portal names the site a title is actually registered to, and CrossRef's record names the journal and publisher that deposited the article, neither of which a clone can write. Predatory, hijacked and mill-made are three different operations, and the check that catches one misses the others.
This page is about that question: the paper exists and you can open it, but is the journal real scholarship? If you cannot find the article at all, that is a different problem and the citation verification routine handles it. Everything below assumes the article is right there in front of you.
Three ways a venue fails
People say "fake journal" and mean one of three quite different operations. Telling them apart matters, because the check that catches one misses the others entirely.
Predatory journals: the review never happened
A predatory journal is a real publication with a real website that takes a fee and publishes more or less anything, without meaningful peer review. Nothing about it is forged. The article exists, the DOI resolves, the PDF has page numbers. The problem is that nothing vouched for the content, so citing it lends your argument no more weight than citing a blog post with footnotes.
The single cheapest tell is turnaround, and there is a number to hold it against. An analysis for Nature of every paper in one large index carrying both submission and acceptance timestamps found a median of about 100 days from submission to acceptance, a figure that had barely shifted in thirty years. Many predatory journals print "received" and "accepted" dates on the article itself. Received on the 3rd, accepted on the 9th, published on the 14th is not review, it is invoicing.
A publication fee proves nothing on its own. Article processing charges are routine in open access, including at journals nobody would question. The fee only becomes a signal when it arrives with the rest of the symptoms.
Hijacked journals: the website is the forgery
This is the one that catches careful readers. A hijacked or cloned journal is a fraudulent site that copies a legitimate journal's title, ISSN and branding, then sells publication in what looks like the real thing. The journal being impersonated is genuine and often respectable. The site you are on is not, and neither is the article you are reading.
Retraction Watch maintains the Hijacked Journal Checker, compiled by researcher Anna Abalkina, which lists cloned journals alongside the originals they impersonate. It passed 400 entries in December 2025. Retraction Watch has also documented hijacking operations aimed at major publishers, so this is not a problem confined to obscure titles. Clones tend to target niche and university journals whose real sites are less familiar, which is exactly why an unfamiliar-looking site is not evidence of anything by itself.
The check: the ISSN Portal record tells you the journal's real home. If two websites claim the same ISSN, the one that is not on the publisher's own domain is the clone.
Paper mills: real journal, manufactured content
Paper mills sell ready-made manuscripts and authorship slots. The output is a genuine article in a genuine journal, sometimes a well-indexed one, whose data, images or author list were produced to order. Every surface check passes, which is what makes this the hardest of the three.
COPE and STM's joint research report analysed data from six publishers covering more than 53,000 submitted papers and put suspected paper-mill submissions at around 2% overall, rising far higher in the specific journals being targeted. Nature has covered the sleuths working to shut these networks down.
You are not going to identify a paper mill from the reference alone, and as a student nobody expects you to. What you can do is read the paper. Mill output tends to be oddly generic: results that never quite connect to the methods, boilerplate phrasing, a reference list padded with loosely related work, a topic chosen because it is easy to fake rather than because anyone needed the answer. A paper that seems to be about nothing in particular is a reason to find a better source, not a puzzle to solve.
The check the clone cannot fake
Every check worth running here has the same shape. You compare what the journal says about itself against what a party the journal does not control says about it. A clone owns its website completely and has every incentive to perfect it. It owns none of the registers below.
The ISSN register
Put the ISSN into https://portal.issn.org/resource/ISSN/ and read which website the record names. The register is run by the ISSN International Centre in Paris and covers over two million serial publications as of 11 August 2026. One detail that causes false alarms: the print and online editions of one journal are separate records, so 0028-0836 and 1476-4687 are both correct for Nature. Two ISSNs is normal. Two different websites claiming one ISSN is not.
The record CrossRef holds
The site in front of you wrote its own masthead. It did not write the metadata deposited with CrossRef. Take any article's DOI and open https://api.crossref.org/works/ plus the DOI, then read two fields: container-title, the journal CrossRef believes this article appeared in, and publisher, the organisation that deposited it. If either disagrees with the site you are reading, you have your answer. A DOI nobody registered returns an HTTP 404 whose entire body is the sentence Resource not found., checked 11 August 2026. Who owns the DOI prefix
The 10.NNNN half of a DOI identifies the organisation that registered it. There are twelve DOI registration agencies, with CrossRef accounting for more than 90% of usage, and you can ask which one owns a prefix in one URL: https://doi.org/doiRA/10.1016 returns [{"DOI":"10.1016","RA":"Crossref"}]. It takes bare prefixes, whole DOIs, and comma-separated lists of them, and a prefix nobody has registered answers DOI does not exist.
Read the result carefully, because this check is easy to over-interpret. CrossRef's own documentation says a prefix tells you who originally registered the DOI, not necessarily who publishes the journal now: prefixes never change when a title transfers between publishers, and one publisher can hold several, so a journal's back-issues and current issues legitimately carry different prefixes. What a prefix lookup establishes cleanly is the negative case. An article whose DOI prefix is registered to nobody at all is not a nuance.
Where the DOI currently points
https://doi.org/api/handles/ plus the DOI returns the URL that identifier resolves to right now and a timestamp for when the publisher last changed it. This matters because a DOI landing on a dead or wrong-looking page is the single most misread signal in this whole area. The DOI-to-URL mapping is the publisher's responsibility and it rots during platform migrations and title transfers; CrossRef sends its members monthly reports of failed resolutions for exactly this reason. A rotted link is not evidence of fraud. Keep the DOI in your reference and find the paper another way.
Whether anyone curates the journal
For open access, ask DOAJ directly: https://doaj.org/api/search/journals/issn:2041-1723 returns JSON whose total is 1 if the journal is listed and 0 if it is not. No key, two requests a second. That listing means more than most people assume, because DOAJ both screens and ejects. It received 8,887 applications in 2025 and rejected 64% of them, and it publishes a public change log of the journals it has removed. Counting that log ourselves on 11 August 2026 gives 2,156 withdrawals recorded since February 2024, with failure to adhere to best practice given as the reason on 1,168 of them. That tally is our own count of DOAJ's spreadsheet rather than a figure DOAJ publishes, so treat the exact numbers as a snapshot and the shape as the point: a directory that ejects a thousand journals for behaviour is doing work that a directory which only ever grows is not.
If we had to give up every check on this page but one, we would keep the ISSN lookup, and that is not the check the guides lead with. Red-flag checklists ask you to judge a website, and the website is the one thing a fraudster controls completely, watches you evaluate, and improves every year. A register asks a question the fraudster cannot answer at all: which site is this title registered to? Checklists have to keep getting better at spotting last season's clones. The register never has to get better at anything.
The five-minute venue check
Run this on any journal you do not already know. It is the same routine whether you are choosing what to cite or double-checking something you already cited.
- Find the journal's real home. Look up the ISSN in the ISSN Portal and compare the registered site against the one you are on. Then find the journal in the publisher's own journal list. Real titles are reachable from their publisher's front door.
- Check who indexes it. Curated lists mean something; broad crawlers do not. For open access, DOAJ admits journals only against published criteria. For indexing generally, look at the Web of Science Master Journal List and Scopus's source list. For biomedicine, check the NLM Catalog to see whether the journal is indexed for MEDLINE. Absence from all of them is not proof of anything, but it moves the burden of proof onto the journal.
- Verify two editors. Do not read the whole board, just pick two names and look them up. Do they exist, do they work where the journal says, do they publish in this field, and does their own page mention the editorship? Fabricated and non-consenting editorial boards are common enough that this check earns its keep.
- Read the policies, not the marketing. Does the journal describe an actual peer review process, state its fees before submission, and publish a policy on corrections and retractions? The checklist at Think. Check. Submit. was written for researchers choosing where to publish and works just as well in reverse. Membership of COPE is a positive signal, and it is checkable rather than a claim on a homepage.
- Look at the article's own dates. Received, revised, accepted, published. The gaps tell you whether anything happened between submission and publication.
One thing worth adding to step four, because it is a signal almost nobody looks for. At a real journal, corrections are objects rather than edits. When a legitimate publisher fixes a published article it issues a separate notice with its own DOI and its own page, usually titled in the shape "Correction to: …", with links running both ways between the notice and the article, so the record shows what changed and when. A journal that handles problems by quietly swapping the PDF leaves no trail at all. Browse a couple of recent issues and look for any correction, retraction or expression of concern. A journal with a substantial archive and not one correction in it has either published nothing worth correcting or is not correcting anything, and real journals make mistakes.
Five minutes, once per unfamiliar journal. You will find that the answer is usually obvious by step two.
The lists, and which of them still work
Students get pointed at lists of bad journals, and the lists differ enormously in how alive they are. Three things worth knowing before you rely on one.
Cabells Predatory Reports is the serious commercial one. It passed 20,274 journals on 30 January 2026, up from roughly 7,000 when it launched in 2017, each assessed against a rubric of more than seventy behavioural criteria. The database is an institutional subscription, so you probably cannot open it. Cabells publishes the criteria themselves for free, though, and reading the criteria is most of the value: it is a list of exactly what to look for on a website, written by people who look at these websites full time.
Beall's List is history, and people still send students to it. Its author took it down in 2017. A community mirror keeps the pages up and the publishers list on it still reads "last updated December 31, 2016", with only a small appendix added since. Nine years of new operators are missing from it, and it never had a formal appeals route. It is useful for recognising a name you already suspect. It cannot clear one.
Inclusion lists and exclusion lists are not interchangeable, and this is the distinction to actually carry away. DOAJ, Scopus and the Web of Science Master Journal List are inclusion lists: somebody applied, was assessed, and was admitted. An exclusion list like Cabells or Beall's can only name what someone has caught. So the evidence runs in opposite directions. Presence on an inclusion list is strong; absence from one is weak, because plenty of legitimate journals never applied. Presence on an exclusion list is strong; absence from one is nearly meaningless, because nobody has audited everything. Most bad advice in this area comes from reading one of those four sentences as though it were another.
One measurement is worth knowing as much for how it ended as for what it found. Macháček and Srholec matched Beall's lists against Scopus and found 324 journals on both, carrying roughly 164,000 articles between 2015 and 2017, about 2.8% of Scopus output over that window. The paper was published, retracted after a complaint from a publisher, then republished in Quantitative Science Studies, and Scopus went on to discontinue coverage of 97 of the matched titles. Two lessons sit in that sequence: predatory publishing does reach curated indexes, and the people who count it get pushed back on hard.
What ungated venues publish now
The reason to care about venue more than you used to: when nothing gatekeeps, the content follows. Researchers writing in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review identified 139 papers showing signs of undisclosed GPT use, with the large majority sitting in non-indexed journals, preprint servers and repositories, all of it reachable through Google Scholar. Their concern was that this material lands on contested topics such as health and the environment, where it can be cited into arguments that look evidence-backed.
Two practical lessons. Being findable in Google Scholar says nothing about whether a venue vets anything, because Scholar indexes broadly by design. And checking a handful of an article's own references is a fast, underrated venue test: journals that publish without review also publish bibliographies that do not resolve.
When a venue fails the check
Look for a better source that supports the same point. Most of the time one exists and swapping it in costs ten minutes. If the claim survives only on the questionable source, that is worth noticing: a point that no reputable venue supports is usually a point that needs rewriting rather than a citation that needs finding, and the search-and-rewrite procedure covers how to do that honestly.
If one entry has gone bad, check the rest, because whatever route produced it produced the others too. Two adjacent questions this check does not answer. Whether the paper still stands, which is a retraction check and takes ten seconds. And whether the paper actually supports your sentence, which is the failure that survives every venue check ever devised and which we go deep on in when a source says something else. A perfectly legitimate journal will happily publish a paper that does not say what you cited it for.
Avoiding the question entirely
The reliable defence is the route you take to a source. Sources found through your library's databases, through a well-established journal, or through the reference list of work you already trust, arrive pre-filtered. Sources that arrive as a link in a chat window do not, and that includes links to real pages, because a model recommending a paper has no view on whether the journal that published it does peer review.
